Hello,

The Marathon server has been unusable since yesterday morning. An administrator needs to be alerted as it looks malicious. Is any contact information available for Mariusnet such as a telephone number?

Your posting the note here is the most effective way to report a problem.

You could post a private message, but it's not going to get to the admin any sooner.

It will connect, but some of the blue bars don't display, and you will be disconnected soon after. Of course, the released versions of Aleph One don't tell you they disconnected, you just stop seeing chat. Next version will fix that.

I didn't say anything because I thought it was set to reboot every night...apparently not.

Wow, sorry, I didn't see this until just now.

The server has been kicked and is restarting now.

Thank you plataypus.

Is it possible to use something like the .xml status feed to build a heartbeat monitor that would autonotify you or a couple admin-types when the feed doesn't change for ... oh ... say ... four hours?

I know it can't run on that box so it would have to be on a peer machine or some user's machine, but at least there'd be a watchdog to notify someone when it's gone all wonky.

Thanks.

Actually, I was thinking about what would be needed to add email notifications for when the specified error state occurs. I haven't debugged it, but it was some form of corruption in memory.

I've also thought about having it auto-die if it encounters 'x' number of errors in a given timespan. The server runs as a service that auto-restarts, so killing it would essentially be the restart it would need.

It being on the same machine isn't an issue as the way it is "dying" isn't machine wide, it affects only the metaserver daemon... I'm just wondering if I can add the self-monitoring to the daemon itself.

Thanks,

I figured that it was a malicious attack on your server, but I guess it could have been cosmic rays too. How about using cron to restart the dameon every 72 Hours. It would counter the effects of the cosmic rays!

I doubt that it was anything malicious... most likely it was just some bad data passed or a hiccup on the network that caused a bad write to memory or something.

It already runs as a service and it was on a restart schedule, but I had to disable that.

The user accounts and user data are stored in individual config files and the restarts would occassionally kill the server while it was in the middle of writing an update to one of those, leaving a mangled file behind... that would essentially kill that account and hang the server up on its restart.... so daily restarts went away for now and the ToDo list grew \:p
