I tried hosting, but my friends reported getting the -4994 can't join game error, so I had one of them try to host from his place, but he can't host either. I've got a mess of routers, so I'm not surprised I'm having problems, but he's got a pretty straightforward setup. Neither of us is behind a firewall, both live in Finland. Anything we need to do? One thing is that we don't have a static IP. Could this be the problem?

that problem can occur when you do not have your username and password entered properly. remember that after you register you need to login HERE and change your password under your profile. that will update it in the game metaserver. then be sure you have entered it properly in the Preferecnce --> Player --> Login screen

Interesting. Will try playing with that--I do notice though that when I change my password here and click "submit", the length of the characters in the password field is longer than what I typed, even though my new password does work. Is this normal?

Yes, it's to mask its length from prying eyes.

Lol that an uregistered Anonymous user is instructing how to register successfully and change pw! Seems accurate, too.

A -4994 is the one that says its a firewall right?

If you are behind routers, you are most likely behind a NAT. If such is the case, you are going to set up port forwarding on your router to your computer for port 3453 (The actual process of this depends on the router). I think that should do it...

Yep, it's the firewall one, and you're probably right, it's time to dig into the router..unfortunately mine is an ancient Linksys beast with a user interface from 1989. New router is in the mail, though, may have better luck with that one... thanks, guys!

Er...you shouldn't. You'll need the internal IP of the machine you want to host on. Usually the way it sets up, it just "forwards" all the traffic directed at the external IP for port 3453 to the internal IP.

So, I if am telling the router to pass all packets received by the router to the machine I am playing Myth on, then I use the 192... of my machine on the local network?

(sorry for being dense)

When I tried setting up port forwarding using the 192... IP address I could see in my router setup I got the message: "server id must be a lan address"

I tried setting it up using the bogus router IP address is assigned (10.0.x.x) and I was able to complete the setup.

I am such a newbie.

thanks for the help DA.

Oh, yeah, router internal address depend on the router. Common ones are 192.168… or 10.0…

Anyway, glad to help.
