Hi peoples, I'm not new to the game, i've come back after several years, although none of you probably know me anyway. I was a noob then, and im a noob now.

You're right, back then it was bungie.net and there weren't any tourney rooms. Those Tournament rooms are rooms that keep track of stats, but without showing your rank. Something like that. You can play in any room.
People periodically organize tournaments. There's a forum here for it, in fact. The Winter Series tourney recently ended, its forum is here: http://tws.tribalstylemusic.net/forum/index.php , but I don't think they'll maintain it for long now that the tourney is over. It's been very active there, tho.
The next really big tournament will be Myth World Cup 2008 this summer. At least, I assume that'll happen. Here's the site for last year's MWC07: http://www.mythgaming.net/mwc2007/index.php . The forum still works there (I've been keeping the Spam thread topped off, heh  )

The other thing about tourney rooms as I recall, is that ranked rooms only keep track of your stats if you have 4 or more people in a game, tourney rooms are designed for tourneys so will record stats for any game that has 2 or more players (or teams).

Sponge, if you're able to host games, just host some ffa (free for all) games. I say ffa so that you're unlikely to be someone's team mate, and therefore responsible only to yourself for the welfare of your units. Maybe put in your game title something conveying the relaxed gaming you want.
Otherwise join a game of ffa.
But if you end up on a team, tell them you're totally rusty and ask for a small role. But make it known you've been long gone or are new so that team mates will 1) cut you slack and 2) not expect too much and give you the power flank or something.
But there are a lot of people who care a really great deal about their stats (gotta have 'em to back your trash talk!) and will give you grief for any slight error. It's a pisser, but what're ya gonna do. So let 'em know you're new.
Oh! IF you can find a game in a non-ranked room (we don't call 'em channels, that's too... I don't know), join that. It's almost certainly going to be more laid back than a game in a ranked room.
