Well the amount of data being passed between you and the server while you are sitting in the lobby is so miniscule by current standards, it's conceivable that even a slight boost in speed could wipe out the tiny bit of ping lag you were seeing.
When the original server code was written (back in the bnet days) lots of players still used modems, and some of those weren't even 56k. 56k was pretty lag-free even during games unless you were playing a deathmatch game with pathfinder dwarves, and sitting in the lobby uses nowhere near the bandwidth you need for playing a game.
