I popped onto Mnet after the playoff game on Sunday, hoping to find others who were rolling up their sleeves for a game and gaming. Upon landing in the lobby, there seemed to be an all-too-familiar chat going on about how much America sucks in every way.

When tossing out a few silly quips - hoping to turn the tide towards something with less bile and hate-spewing - I unwittingly drew the attention of he who appeared to be the lynch-pin of the chat; Pogue.

With all of his venom at a fevered pitch, he (unprovoked) wheeled on me - challenging my choice to play mazz mostly, and to have wanked him at some point in the past - and he fervently launched into how retarded, senile, gay, moronic, worthless, .... (etc) ... I and my family are.

Withing a few lines of chat, I realized that it was futile and frustrating to try to chat with him, since every response was an ignorant and personal attack on my character, my family, my wife, my life in general. I opted instead to host a game, which filled up quickly and we played for hours.

I was just now sitting on the toilet - which I found to be a perfect time to reflect on the situation, and realized that I was wrong to think that Pogue acts this way because he is young/immature. I know nothing about how old he is, and would honeslty be surprised to learn if he is anything older than a teenager.

The truth is, I have a 12 year old son - who I do not allow to log onto Mariusnet (to avoid such ignorant and rude behavior) - and he is far more intelligent, rational, mature, and socially aware than I have ever seen Pogue be.

I know that Pogue, and those like him, have been banned repeatedly - and I am probably not the only host to have wanked him or muted him for cause. However, with the shrinking community - I guess you could argue - what's the point of banning someone?

I suppose my argument would be - the community has shrunk because of people like him. I personally know of a few dozen former myth players that would not bother returning because of the several dozen players that can't seem to figure this out.

My version of self-policing of guys like Pogue, dac, etc...is working fine for me. Mute and Wank offer me the blissful ignorance I seek on mariusnet....

.... but the fact remains - as long as people like that remain - many more won't.

The irony is that the people driving others away because of their behavior will be among the last to go and will still be whining and complaining that the community shrunk because mariusnet didn't allow even more of the very behavior that eventually turned so many other people off of playing myth online.

Serious question, do people really quit playing Myth because of a person or persons? Or do people quit because on average there are 20 people online, 10 people afk, and 8 people playing Mazz or Trow/PG/Gimble? I find it hard to believe that users are fully entertained and enjoy playing the same maps for 14 years?
Regardless, it is very simple to avoid a player or two if you really have a problem with them, as you've mentioned by using the wank/mute features. Furthermore you can password your games. We all know its very simple if need be and if that dosent work, you take a screenshot of any personal attack even if they are just calling you 'fat' and Om will ban them. Yes, more likely they will come back a couple hours or days later with a new account but its a temporary fix.
Anyways, GO GIANTS!

Both and other reasons actually. I too have seen some players stop showing up because they lose interest due to all the drama others are so willing to give out. Can it be avoided? Sure, but those players find it easier just not showing up. Sometimes its just temporary, but once they stop for a while it is easier to stop longer than that.

The less players there are the less games some people want will be hosted. So other players stop showing up because of the few choices of games being hosted.

Getting rid of the drama queens (even temporary) can help prevent losing players. As for the lack of game options, that would be harder to prevent/solve. It would require more players and more hosts.

As for the reasons people continue to play the same specific maps, it really depends on the player. Some players will settle with what little options there are while others give up or take breaks. There are also the players that see some maps as having enough variety to continue playing over and over. For some of the multiplayer maps, they see it as different every round because of the different choices their opponents take making it different enough each round for them. For Mazz, well it has things the others don't and if more maps had it less Mazz would be played.

I vote with my feet very fast when the lobby or a game has one or more disagreeable people doing their best imitation of a spoiled 13 year old. Thats just one of course. There might be other grown ups here to though.

Apparently, Kirk made Babyshaker quit for good and now OM has made it his personal mission to constantly ban Kirk for no real reason, but to just ban him. Stuff like that kills myth, because Kirk will host games for ppl, and is a lot of fun to play with, but OM seems to think banning him and not letting him talk in the lobby is a good idea. I don't see your logic in talking about saving the community and getting more ppl to play when you want to ban players. Do you ppl seriously think there aren't trolls and ppl who rage out at other ppl on other games? That is just delusional. Probably the reason a lot of new ppl don't play myth for long is because they get sick of being raped by ppl that have been playing for 12 years and don't want to take the time to get good at it. Losing is not fun, so why not play something else? I highly doubt anyone has left myth just on the basis of being called a retard, and if they're really that fragile, well they shouldn't even go near the internet.

Hey Pog2 banning kirk is a great idea, now if only we can get OM to ban you!!!
As far as being delusional, here's a thought, this is a private server that we get the benefit from for free!.All they ask is we abide by their rules. So i think your delusional if you think that you can bypass the rules or get them adjusted to include idiots who cant abide by any rules.
You seem unable to play myth without bullying or abusing someone.Things not too good at home?

also a quick check of these forums will reveal that Pog2 always likes to have the last post.Over to you Pog2 lol

ah, i thought babyshaker died.. all he played was great library and landing at white falls anyway.. was funny seeing that everyday though..

games arent fun without classic trolls and drama, imo

My good friend Pogue is one of finest people I have ever mythed with, and is one of the reasons I still log in regularly on an otherwise ancient game.

Even just an extra month keeping me around myth is much more important to the myth community than the hundreds of worthless and spineless newbs that Pogue has no doubt done a fantastic job in cleansing from the server.

I appreciate the honorable mention, especially since this post is the only thing even remotely close to talking to you that I've done in months.

For the record, when pogue was going off on your family I said absolutely nothing about it. I'm sure they're wonderful people who deserve the best, and maybe someday they'll get it.

And pogue - I love you bro, even if you are from Boston.

Edit: I believe this post is 100% in complaince with mnet rules and regulations.

Pogue's just mad because he's 40, still flips burgers at McDonald's, has never had a girlfriend, and knows that, like GKG, his life is going nowhere. Just passing on what he told me the last time I talked him out of suicide. Feel better Pogue

Yeah you got me Myrk. I see someone has been taking insult lessons from godcops.

Godcops School Of Insulting:

1) Person works at a fast food place.
2) Person is over 35 and has no life.
3) Never had a girlfriend.

So predictable, but I must say I am honored that you broke your post MWC defeat (yet again) silence to talk to me. I am humbled by your 5 orange balls. BTW speaking of no life, you have like 29 facebook friends, and now that you pissed off NC that number has dwindled to about 20 just, lol Myrk. It's gonna be interesting to see who wants you on their team this year...oh wait....you could form a team with godcops. PERFECT SOLUTION.

Ok btw Kirk owned you yet again, and LOL at you getting benched in like half the finals games, when you did play you got totally owned on top of that, my personal favorite was the Lichen game after you got stomped, "this game is a joke." LOL

SO basically pretty much anyone that has claimed to be as good as you at this game and played since the beginning has won at least one MWC, except you. Keep trying Myrk, I hope 2012 is your year! Maybe you can be Orange Guy on the new Game Changers squad with ppl like: West Wind and bizkit, oh wait....

Finally, I think it only fitting to end with this:

HONKEY 1 MYRK 0 GGS

LOL

Your understanding of the language rules is inaccurate. The rules cover more than what you consider 'bad words'. Try reading again, and paying attention to the intent of the rule rather than looking for a list of banned words.

"Transmitting any unlawful, harmful, threatening, abusive, harassing, defamatory, vulgar, obscene, hateful or racially, ethnically or otherwise objectionable content, as determined by any marius net Admin. This includes vulgar and abusive language, even when masked by symbolic characters or misspelled, and includes screen names, profiles, and game names. If it cannot be said on prime time network television, do not say it on marius net."

If your intent in using 'non-bad' words is to convey something you can't because it would be against the rules, then you probably shouldn't say it.

Some days just don't work. I look at the players in the lobby and decide wether I'll play or not. It's a CHAT, you don't have to say anything and noone will know if you're afk or not. Some groups of people don't work out, it's the same irl, accept it and move on.

As to which maps people play, Koth PG, chest, gimble, I don't get tired of them.

Would like it if there where more games of AVA final. The original ww2 seemed to end up in just 20 games of recon elim koth in a row until I see no point in it.

i just wanted to reply a bit on this topic. i have invited family members as well as co-workers and even went as far as to help them install this game to play.after a week ,every single one of them declined to be involved with this game because of specific behavior that happens daily, over and over again. so yes, behavior in lobby does directly affect the life of myth.
im not bitching about it really just stating facts.
its too bad too because myth can be such great fun and a lot of people work hard to keep it up to date and functioning. once these developers get sick of the bullcrap and stop doing what they do because eventually they will realize its a wasted effort, we are all in trouble.

+1 contrary's experience in trying to get new people to play Myth. "Seems like a nice game, pity it's full of prepubescents." They're not offended by being called ____ and _____, they just find it makes the game less fun than their other entertainment options.

Hurling insults while playing is its own subculture, not the playstyle of most people over 18. There's no reason why people should have to play like this if they want to play Myth.

At the risk of stating the obvious, reposting slurs and offensive language doesn't remove one's obligation to follow the rules for civil discourse on the forums.
