#23226 - 01/31/10 07:54 PM Myth II online firewall error - I'm stumped

My friend convinced me to get Myth II: Soulblighter and update it with the latest version 1.7 patch from project magma. I haven't really played it much yet,but he wants to play online. I however keep getting a "the game may not be accepting more players or is behind a firewall" error.

I turned off my firewall.
I checked to make sure the windows firewall was off.
I turned my firewall back on and tweaked the settings(several times).
I gave up for a while.
I tried connecting to my friend using TCP/IP and entering his ip/port info.
I tried using Hamachi to emulate a LAN connection as I've done before with Starcraft and other games.
I gave up again.
I double checked my firewall settings and ran Myth II as an administator.
I remembered that I now have wireless internet instead of an uber long ethernet cable.
I logged in and forwarded port 3453.
I checked portforward.com to ensure I had done everything correctly with my router.
I still cannot host nor join an online game of Myth II.

I am thoroughly stumped. Neither my friend nor myself can think of anything else I haven't tried.

I am running Windows Vista 32 bit OS. My router is a D-link WBR-2310. Windows firewall is turned off. I have Norton Anti-virus (and I use its firewall). I am the administrator on my computer.

If anyone who thinks they can help needs anymore information, just ask - though I think covered everything. I'm not sure though, I'm not generally used to asking for help because I usually fix things fairly quickly.

Is the game you are trying to join from a computer that connects to the same router as you? If so, that is the issue. Currently if you connect to a host's game that shares the same IP as you, you will not be able to join.

You said you have Norton AntiVirus. Some antivirus programs prevent you from accessing a connection or others from accessing your connection. When trying to join a game, alt tab out and see if your antivirus program is asking for permission to allow an action.

For some routers, you have to tell them which program or EXE needs access to port 3453. Is yours one of them?

Strange you can't join games. Usually people have trouble hosting but not joining.

No, my friend and I aren't on the same network. We are in two separate states.

I have checked the anti-virus and it hasn't given me any sort of message asking for anything. Its not solely anti-virus its that Norton Internet Security suite thing. We've used it ever since my brother gave the family computer a virus downloading his crap.

I'll play around with my router for a while and see what I can do.

From your description it sounds like your friend is hosting a game and you are unable to join, is that correct?

The errors you are receiving indicate a problem with the security/firewall/router settings on the computer of the person hosting the game, not with your computer.

Yes, I also cannot host a game. I also cannot get access to the router on my network, so I am restricted to joining. But I cannot join games specifically hosted by my friend.

Then you have two issues - both of which are no doubt at least partly caused by the same root problem - but hosting is generally more involved/complicated than just joining a game, so maybe it would be good to work on your 'joining a game' problem first.

First - Is your friend hosting a game on mariusnet? Or is he hosting via IP?

We've tried both mariusnet and IP hosting with either hosting before we realized I couldn't.

On my part, I can join a game that is hosted by someone else. I don't know about their end.

I concur with Om on this.

It sounds like a simple case of both of you need to configure yourselves to be able to host.

You cannot join his game because he doesn't have his set up correctly and you cannot host because you don't have yours done correctly.

As for what is needed, you need to enable Port Forwarding in your router.

You should forward TCP & UDP 3453 to whatever IP Address your computer has on your LAN.

Your friend should do the same with his router.

Then, provided that there are no additional firewall issues, you should both be able to host and join each other's games.

See this article for a "How To" on port forwarding for your particular router:

After that, ensure that you have allowed Myth_II.exe as an exception in your Norton Firewall.

Its true. I had forgotten that I had only tried to join games hosted by you, Siv. You having played before, I did not think to ask if you had hosted a game before.

I have exceptions set on the firewall and I retraced my steps by the instructions on portforward.com, before posting this. Yay for checking the FAQ.

I shall get on later tonight and join a random game to see if I can at least join other people's games and of course I'll try tweaking to see if I can get hosting to work. I'm doing some video stuff right now and I'm afraid if I run a game at the same time my computer might freeze, however old the game is (stupid vista).

You can easily join a game (exception of password) .
The idea of PorForward is just to allow other IPS into your host i-e host a myth 2 game .
Unlike other multiplayer games you do not need portforward to join a game .
Give it a try !

I also saw you playing in a room by yourself, do you know how to switch rooms?
