I'm trying to make a Myth color map in Paint. I saved the pic I made as 16-bit bitmap. Myth will only accept 8-bit. \:\(
Any advise?

Use Photoshop or something else that gives you more options than Paint. Maybe Gimp, though I haven't tried it.

I don't have Photoshop and I have already tried Gimp but I have the same problem.

Did you use an old version of Gimp? Look for an index option. I don't use Gimp so I can't be sure unless I download it. Look harder! \:p

You might try IrfanView or ImageMagick.

did u convert the image to Indexed and select < 256 (240 is a safe#) colors? that in +theory+ should save it as 8-bit when you save it as a .bmp file in gimp. the #of colors is in binary so if you didn't index it with less than 256 colors it's going to need more bits (16 or 32) to store the color info. (i know gimp has a convert to indexed option and lets u pick the #of colors to index to, i just don't know for sure that it uses the #of colors to determine the fileformat.

ps. i don't want to discourage you as i am all for new maps (go mapmaker...it's your birthday....), but you definitely want to use a grafx program with layers if you want to make a decent looking colormap. Paint and other non-layer gfx pgms are notorious for being the source of some really ugly colormaps. Try PhotoGimp if you want something more Photoshop like - it's Gimp but with a photoshop-like interface. (If you haven't seen it, Clem's Colormapping Tutorial is as close to a Colormap 'bible' as you are going to find - I am not very graphically artistic but following his tutorial I was able to produce a decent looking (if not particularly exciting) colormap. -- Colormapping Walkthrough or lots more colormap how-tos .

if money is an object, you could look for an older version of Photoshop. clem mentions he was using PS v6 at the time he wrote the tutorial, but I know from personal experience that versions as far back as v5.5. have all the features mentioned in the walkthrough.

for a general guide of what versions are compatible with which OS try here .

Thanks, man. And no. Money isn't the problem. I just didn't want to spend any unnecessary money as I'm saving up for a new desktop.
