As you've probably figured out 'tags' are where myth stores just about EVERYTHING you see/hear/do in Myth. Unit animations, scenery, sounds, physics, monster details, etc - it's all in 'tags'.
When you alter settings in Fear/Loathing or create your own new tags they get created in the local folder in your M2 folder.
So, when you play a game of Myth, the game loads 'tags' from three sources - the standard tag files in your 'tags' folder, any plugins you have active, AND your local folder. Any tags in your local folder will override/replace the same tags in plugins or the official M2 tags files.
When you select a plugin/map to 'untag' it creates a folder containing tags in their proper subfolders. This is basically a 'local' folder containing just the tags you extracted.
To use those tags in a project you are working on you need to have those tags (in the proper folders) in your Myth II 'local' folder. You can either just rename the folder containing the xtracted tags or if you have other things in your local folder youdon't want to lose/delete, you can copy the contents of your extracted folder's subfolders into the corresponding folders in your local folder. (If you aren't sure what tags you need, just do an 'extract all tags' because the relationship between different tags isn't the most intuitive when you are first trying things and if you are missing tags you need the game will crash)
If you haven't already, I would suggest going through one of the Myth II mapmaking tutorials. They cover the editing of a number of tags and if you check your local folder before and after you modify things you'll get an idea of what tags do what (when you edit a standard Myth 2 tag a new copy of the tag gets created in your local folder). I am sure Pyro (creator of the most excellent 'Myth Starter Guide' - link on the left sidebar) would urge you to just dive in and poke around - if that style of learning works well for you then go for it.
If you do want a little structure to your mapmaking journey, for my money, although it's several years old and doesn't cover recent changes/enhancements to Fear, I think Heal with Steel's "Mapmaking for Newbies" is still the most comprehensive M2 mapmaking guide to be found.
thanks, i have the editing part just about down, but i dont know why i was thinking the xtracted files go in plugins. thats where i went wrong. now that i got that figured out, stay tuned for my next big map!!!!
